About 150 residents packed a meeting as the Lake Richardson ISD board defended a two year contract with Dr. J J Pearce to develop programs and secure funds. Critics labeled it fiscal irresponsibility and questioned the final cost to taxpayers. The board refused to revoke the offer, citing a signed contract and a June 6 decision. Superintendent elect John Roberts supports Pearce for state and private funding aids, denying lobbying ties. The total expected district expense is estimated at 68 000 to 80 000. The meeting also discussed elementary rezoning plans to relieve crowding and moved toward a June 23 special session.
Richardson announces reappraisal of all property for the year with notices to owners showing new values. Property owners may appeal to the Tax Board of Equalization on June 27 28 and 30. Phone questions to the tax department at 235 8331 before seeking board review. The city council will set the new tax rate around October 1. Last year the rate was 1.50 per 100 with a 50 percent assessment ratio.
The Richardson city council approved an Inter national Trans-AMA Motocross race at Rabbit Run International Motocross Park for Oct 30 with racers from around the world. Last year 18 000 spectators attended and 10 000 to 15 000 are expected this year.
Police report multiple weekend thefts including a Greenbrier 900 block home cash value of $620 from camera and jewelry. a city vehicle light valued $350 removed. a $950 check drawn on closed account and a $150 cash withdrawal. and a Big Horn 2500 block home $75 cash from piggy banks and $10 from a kitchen drawer. No suspects named.
The North Central Expressway will start pothole repairs with bids opening Wednesday and Thursday in Austin. Richardson section gets initial work from Freeway to Collin County line, followed by a 15 mile stretch to Spur 366. Crews will strip asphalt and lay an anti skid surface on exposed concrete between 8:30 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Attorney Roland Boyd notes HB 971 alters state highway funding to 90 percent by state and 10 percent by local sources but applies only to roads without frontage roads. He warns no highway may use the 90-10 split, stressing frontage roads are essential for Loop 9. The highway department plans bids for an LBJ Freeway overpass at Valley View Lane, advancing a 9.1 mile controlled access route from I 35 west to DFW Airport with completion slated for 1981 and a spring 1979 opening for the initial segment.
