Twenty three candidates have applied for the chief of police job vacancy created by Chief J. W. Golden’s June 1 retirement. Of the applicants, five are internal, including four lieutenants and a sergeant, while eighteen come from outside the department, mostly from the nearby area. The City Manager will not actively interview until month’s end and expects to draw applicants from other cities through ads in professional magazines. None of the current applicants has previously served as police chief, and final selection will involve the City Council after initial front-runner introduction. Salary is open, with Golden’s last pay around nineteen thousand dollars annually.
