Ice Jams Threaten Washington Flood Outlook

Two large ice jams on the Yakima River raise flood warnings as arctic storm batters the Pacific Northwest. Civil defense volunteers and helicopter crews ready to airlift food and medicine to 500 mountain residents cut off near the California Oregon border. Kraus Elected Barrister Head for Richardson Bar

Roger W. Kraus of 324 Brookwood will head the Richardson Bar Association for the coming year. Officers named include Lyndell Bridgewater as first vice president Robert W. Porter as second vice president and Thomas M. Nelson as secretary treasurer. The group, comprising Richardson and Dallas attorneys who live in Richardson, meets monthly at the Dallas Bar Association headquarters in the Adolphus Hotel.

Demo Chieftain Faces Ousters Debate in Dallas County

County Democratic chairman William H. Clark urged focusing on expanding party membership rather than ousting precinct chairmen who backed Republicans in the November election. Secretary Dar Weiser seeks to oust or censure those chairmen for loyalty oath violations, with a Jan. 12 executive committee meeting to decide. Clark plans to present recommendations on strengthening the party and replacing vacant precinct chairs.

Richardson Merchants Report Busy Christmas Exchanges

Richardson merchants continued their Yuletide exchanges as customers traded returned gifts and swapped items. Merchants said overall sales were strong with some reports of lower sales than last year while exchanges increased and many shoppers traded up to pricier items.

Cullum Firm Approved For Main Layings

Cullum Construction Co. of Richardson won the city main water and sewer project bid at 110,630, the lowest bid. E. L. Dalton Co. was second at 119,535.50. Council also reviewed bids for equipment, two sign appeals, and hearings on Alma and Bowser roads assessments while considering zoning change requests and easement proposals for a service station at Spring Valley and Waterfall Way. Lone Star Gas Co. presented a street relocation dedication for Alma Rd at the northern end as part of the current paying contract.

Founders building opens as Center expands in Texas

Moves to Richardson October opening of the Found ers building and bringing together research and post doctoral education programs on its suburban campus topped the year for the Gradu ate Research Center of the Southwest. By year end the Center employed 246, SCAS included 183, with 128 full time staff plus 30 adjuncts. Investments reached $6.21 million with support from seven agencies led by NASA NSF ACS and PHS. Highlights include Yale regional seminar, NASA Ames contract for cosmic ray detectors, and international invitations for Center scientists.

Truck Carrying Radioactive Shipment Leaks in City

A tractor trailer carrying Cobalt 60 and Radium 226 leaked fluid in Charlotte causing civil defense alert but no danger was found. Driver H W Crowley, from Winston-Salem, had picked up the shipment in Fort Gordon and was bound for Baltimore when the leak occurred. The truck was halted in Winston-Salem for investigation after notification by McLean's Trucking Co. and the state highway patrol.
