Richardson residents report ongoing thefts of outdoor lights during the Christmas period. Robert Hirst of 2437 Fairway reported 43 colored lights stolen from his residence on Christmas Eve.
An old Negro man and his five hungry grandchildren were fed and sheltered by Richardson Fire Department after two firefighters spotted barefoot children at a derelict shack near Jupiter and Belt Line. Firemen cooked a supper, provided clothing and blankets, and with Fire Chief Richard Russell arranged long term aid to end their hunger by noon the next day.
Brighten Christmas collected food for three months and gathered clothes, furniture, linens, and shoes for a needy family. Maj. Wolfe of the Salvation Army arranged a Sears stove and helped locate a birth certificate to secure a pension. The effort grew into a district tradition supporting 30 families since 1961, with six families this year aided by the Richardson Fire Department.
A 38 year old Richardson man entered an unoccupied apartment on S Bowser Rd and fell asleep. The manager found him and police took him to jail after a drunkenness arrest. He lived on Spring Valley Rd across town and paid a fine.
A five alarm fire in Dallas Oak Lawn caused 75 000 dollars in damage to a four story office building housing a medical clinic and other firms. Two teenagers delayed reporting the fire claiming to stay out of trouble while a 16 year old urged silence. Eighty firefighters battled the flames for an hour, with injuries to two responders and one child observer.
Richardson resident Earl Weed found a white and gold ladies purse in Floyd Road center and brought it to the police station. The billfold held $42.41 and an identification card for a Lexington Kentucky resident. Police seek the owner of the purse.
The Columbia and Willamette rivers surged to record crests near Portland as 1,200 residents were ordered to evacuate overnight. Gov. Hatfield urged flood cleanup steps while rescuers battled difficult conditions and remote areas faced hunger and lack of shelter. The Willamette reached 29.85 feet, Columbia 27.6 feet, narrowly spared downtown Portland by a 30-foot seawall.
Douglasville, Ga. police say James Lester Purcell admitted his wife's death was accidental but investigators say he killed Geral dine Purcell after she mailed him a skeletonized dog along with a Christmas card. Purcell, 56, was charged with murder and returned to Ocala, Florida.
Richardson Public Library expands its shelves with two new titles on fires. Morris's Fires and Fire Fighters traces 300 years of U S blazes from Jamestown 1608 to Texas City 1947 and surveys fire engines and firemen. The Fire Protection Handbook 1962 edition offers updated fire fighting methods safety and building design chapters.
On U S highway 63 north of Black Rock a collision caused by a 300 pound hog killed Henry D. Dixon 40 and his wife 32 of Smithville Ark. They were passengers in a car driven by Henry E Dixon 29 of Imboden. The crash sent the vehicle into a second car driven by Virgil L Walker Jr 46 of Springfield Mo injuring Walker his wife Leona 48 and son Larry Lee Walker 16 all seriously.
