A seven pound baby girl named Mary received loving care from Nurse Cla rene Knape at Richardson General Hospital after appearing on the hospital’s south entrance concrete Wednesday afternoon. The newborn has remained under hospital staff care since, while state officials weigh federal revenue sharing impacts on taxes and welfare programs.
The Richardson Symphony Orchestra will hold the fifth annual Young Artist Competition on March 17 at Richland College. Open to qualified elementary to high school students nationwide, with three divisions Piano Strings Woodwinds Brass. Winners each receive 125 dollars. one overall winner earns 100 dollars for performing with the orchestra May 1, 1973.
A five pound three ounce newborn girl was found abandoned at Richardson General Hospital, wrapped in sheets near the south entrance. A young couple with their own child alerted Rev. Charles D. Vanderslice, who summoned a nurse. The infant, later named Mary by Nurse Clorene Knape, is healthy and in maternity care under Welfare Department jurisdiction while authorities seek the mother and await Juvenile Court decisions on custody. Adoption inquiries have flooded the hospital and police, with interest from as far as Duncanville.
Dallas City Council approved a 15.5 percent rate increase for Southwestern Bell one party residential lines and raises for business lines, boosting next year revenues by over 14 million. The change awaits Federal Price Commission approval. Mayor Wes Wise and Councilman Garry Weber dissented.
Dallas Museum of Fine Arts inaugurates a major show titled The Hand and the Spirit Religious Art in America 1700 1900 hosting over 120 paintings and sculptures. The exhibit spans folk to Academic art with works by Eakins West Copley and Allston and runs through January 14 at Fair Park. Jane Dillenberger organized the show with support from NEA Rockefeller and Lilly Endowment. highlights Protestant Americana and santos from the Southwest.
The Daily News will skip publishing on Monday December 25 to allow staff to celebrate Christmas. Advertising and business offices will close Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Editorial offices close at noon Saturday and reopen Tuesday morning. Ad copy deadline for the December 26 edition is 10 am Friday December 22. Normal deadlines apply for December 27.
Gov Preston Smith orders National Guard to assist DPS and local police during Christmas holidays. An estimated 87 traffic deaths are projected as guardsmen from Dec 22 to 25 operate in six DPS districts across 106 counties. Helicopters will survey traffic. guardsmen report violators to authorities. Twenty five guardsmen per district patrol with highway patrol partners.
Richardson police investigate a Wednesday armed robbery at 7 11 store number 22 on 144 Campbell Road the third in two weeks. Two men with a gun demanded cash from employee Larry Draehn who said they fled in a white Dodge van with an undetermined amount of money. In separate burglaries coin machines owned by United Coin Company were broken into at four locations with a total of 1 135 stolen, and a church lawnmower was stolen from Crestview Baptist Church. The City Plan Commission schedules two public hearings at 8 p m at City Hall including zoning for industrial property at 527 N Interurban and plats for Citbank Meadowcreek and North Central additions.
In Austin the 26 Republican electors cast their votes for Richard Nixon and Spiro Agnew. Notables included Sam Wyly Dallas Walker Brents Fort Worth William C. Conner Fort Worth Estelle Teague Hurst and Walter Fleming Dallas as substitute for former mayor Erik Jonsson. State Rep. Fred Agnich led the luncheon with Sen. John Tower absent, praising Texas as a two party state and noting attendees like State Senator-elect Betty Andujar of Fort Worth.
Richardson weather will be generally fair and warmer Friday with a low near 38 tonight and a high around 62. The forecast calls for mild temperatures and dry conditions as the day progresses.
Herbert D. Weitzman of Henry S. Miller Company reports two new buildings at Dal-Rich Shopping Center Belt Line and Coit Road near completion. A 5,000 square foot front unit will house U Frame-It Shop and Avon Beauty Salon, with leasing by Paul Whitman and Allan Berg. Construction for an August 1973 start on a 35,000 square foot south building will boost total leasable space to 160,000 square feet, with twenty six firms already leasing space.
