Christmas costs rise for shoppers says local merchants

Dennis Cooper of J C Penney in Richardson Heights says costs for this Christmas are higher than last year and that next year will bring even larger bills for consumers. He notes prices at retail stay roughly level in many areas while costs climb due to Phase Four of the President's economic plan.

Richardson grants special permit for Wayside School site

The Richardson City Council approved an amendment to zoning ordinance 886-A granting Wayside School a special permit to operate a private school at 208 West Spring Valley Rd in the I-Mil Industrial District. The meeting covered bids for city vehicles and equipment, and various other actions including abandoning Old Alma Road and accepting storm sewer easements.

UT Dallas to add three new degree programs, regents say

The UT Board of Regents approved three new UT Dallas degree programs: PhD in management science, MS and PhD in international management studies with East Asia emphasis, and MS in special education. Also approved were revised plans for a 145000 square foot clinical sciences building costing about 9.3 million dollars for the Dallas Medical School.

Tennis Center to Open at Huffhines Park

Richardson opens a new $167,000 tennis center at Huffhines Park Plano Road with eight lit courts, a windbreak, a lounge and pro Marty Halpern. Hours 6am 10 30pm weekdays, 1pm 10 30pm Sundays, fees 90 cents resident 1 80 non resident for 90 minutes. Formal dedication set for December 19.

The Richardson Jaycees Saturday launched the I Care I Save campaign with a home checklist for 33 eco friendly actions. Participants earn points and return the sheet to receive an emblem while learning to reduce energy use, recycle, and cut pollution.

Teenagers Hurt In Richardson Expressway Crash

Richardson police investigate a serious collision on Central Expressway that injured four teenagers and a 70-year-old man. Hearse driver Elmo Brooks was rear ended by a white pickup, then struck by a Ford driven by a Dallas man. Victims from the ambulances include pickup driver Robert O Neal 17 and passenger Richard Sparks 18 and two other youths Terry Phillips 18 and Carolyn Dale Walker 16. Brooks was taken to Baylor Hospital by air. Police report conflicting accounts and no charges yet as the investigation continues.

Hutchison enters Texas governor race as third GOP candidate

Rep. Ray Hutchison of Dallas announced his bid for the 1974 Texas governor nomination, joining Jim Granberry and Hank Grover. He touted Republican strength, criticized the Democratic Party, and noted his decision came after weeks of consideration with no other prompting.

Police investigate robbery at Como Motel scene

Early Sunday an armed robbery and assault occurred at the Como Motel on 721 S Central Expressway. Over $100 was taken from a motel cash register and an employee’s purse as the suspect fled with a handgun. A warrant was issued for Jerry Wayne Sirkel and his wife of McKinney after pawned guns tied to a burglary were traced to them. Both remain in custody on $17,500 bond. Two men were arrested Monday for a Schwinn bicycle theft worth over $50. Brenda Mann reported an unknown man in her home, described as about 5'10" in a dark raincoat, who fled with about $40 in cash. Sylaid Crunk reported dashboard damage after someone entered his car, with repairs over $40.
