Governor Smith approves grants to North Central Texas Council

Gov Smith announced ten grants totaling 318,927 to the North Central Texas Council of Governments. Tarrant County received three awards totaling 137,498 including 72,690 for a criminal justice information system expansion. County cash match 17,500 and in kind 47,216. Additional grants funded probation officers and a volunteer coordinator in the Juvenile Probation Department with county in kind matches. Grand Prairie got 26,400 to upgrade police tech including video monitoring and identification systems with cash match 8,800. North Richland Hills received 10,363 for a police cadet program with in kind 9,258.

Curve on Melrose Threatens Street Safety Near Schools

A 600 block Melrose street curve near J J Pearce High School and nearby Northrich Junior High and Mohawk Elementary has seen multiple accidents. City traffic official Bill Martin notes wet conditions and speeding as main causes. new ceramic button lane delineators and curve warnings have been installed.

Perkin s request denied at City Plan hearing

At City Hall the City Plan Commission held a public hearing on Dr Terry Perkins request for commercial zoning for a Plano Road site opposite Neely Huffhines park. Neighbors Avery Sauls and Mrs Huffhines opposed citing 135 acres already zoned for commercial use and urging no further northward expansion.

Richardson School Board to vote on president seeks replacement

At tonight's regular meeting the Richardson School Board will consider resigning President Paul J. Ashby after a one month term and filling the vacancy caused by Dr. Stanley McCaleb. Nine nominations are listed for the unexpired term, with an appointment planned. The board will also discuss maternity leave policy revisions and name a 15 member textbook committee chaired by Superintendent J J Pearce.

Public hearings set by Richardson City Council tonight

The Richardson City Council will continue two public hearings recessed from earlier dates at 7 p.m. in City Hall. One concerns Dr. George Apple s request for industrial and local retail zoning on about 22.8 acres at Highway 544E and North Star Road, with Plano consulted due to shared annexed area. The second hearing covers front yard setback and lot coverage for certain residential zones, delayed for Richardson Homebuilder's Association illness. The council will also set dates for two hearings including Vernon L. Watson's zoning for Arapaho Road site, and theRichardson General Hospital site now slated for December 18 after a Dec. 18 change at the request of the applicant.

Services set for Danny Baccus victim in fatal crash near Sweetwater

Burglary, thefts and one arrest reported weekend

Police investigated two burglaries and two thefts over the weekend and made one arrest. Virginia Graver reported a barn break in with seven saddles worth 730 dollars. A Centennial Homes employee said an air compressor worth 490 dollars was stolen from a cement pad at a home under construction. A Richardson man was arrested on a shoplifting charge after being found in a local department store and given a notice to appear. Harold Earnst said a tape deck player worth 62 dollars was taken from his car in the apartment lot.
