Storms Sweep Texas Panhandle and South Plains

Storms clashed as warm Gulf air met cool air from the north over West Texas, bringing 60 mph winds in Lubbock and 40 mph gusts in Amarillo. Hail struck the Sudan Amherst area while a severe thunderstorm watch covered Hutchinson and nearby counties. Forecasts expect continued showers and thundershowers with cooler, near normal temperatures tonight.

Early dismissal for Richardson first graders set at 1 p.m

Richardson Independent School District will dismiss first graders at 1 p.m. for the first three weeks of school. The plan supports parent conferences and record gathering while easing the transition from summer activities. Parents of bus students are asked to arrange afternoon transport during this period.

Jacoby Joins U S Aces in New York Bridge Exhibition

Dallas based U S Aces led by Ira G. Corn Jr. stage a New York exhibition with six top players including Jim Jacoby of Richardson. Safe Young Driver award going to Lynda Brewster

Lynda Brewster 17, daughter of Mr and Mrs Lyle J Brewster 627 Ridgedale, is named recipient of the second Safe Young Driver Award by the Richardson Evening Optimist Club. She is a Richardson High School coed, member of the Golden Eagle Band and Girls Service League, has completed school driver education, and holds a perfect driving record. A Richardson Police memorandum praised her signaling during turns. The award was presented by Jay Tharp at Youngbloods Restaurant during a weekly club meeting.

RISD conducts five day orientation for 1200 staff at start of year

More than 1,200 teachers and staff attend a five day orientation in the Richardson Independent School District ahead of classes. Over 312 new teachers begin at Richardson High School with district officials detailing personnel records and handbooks. Labor Day follows with 26,500 students expected to enroll across 31 district buildings, the largest in the district’s history.

Two Richardson Officers Bound for Regional Police Academy

Jimmie R. Adams Jr. and Milton L. Newsom Jr. of the Richardson Police Department will attend a 10 week Basic Course in Applied Police Science at the Regional Police Academy in Arlington. The academy trains officers from 10 North Central Texas cities to improve law enforcement through cooperative education.

Dallas Newsman to Speak on Vietnam Visit at Auditorium

WFAA TV journalist Bob Gooding will recount his Vietnam trip at a public service at Greenville Auditorium tonight at 8:30. Sponsored by Richardson Kiwanis Club, the free talk invites all area residents to attend. Gooding and cameraman Fred Hatton reported interviews with Dallas area servicemen during their tour.

Michigan student files 160 page virtual storage dissertation

University of Michigan graduate student Tad Pinkerton submitted a fully printed revised and footnoted 160 page doctoral dissertation on Program Behavior and Control in Virtual Storage Computer Systems. The work required 4 600 punch cards and was reproduced entirely by computer.

Richardson artists to display work at sidewalk sale

Daily News adjusts deadlines for Labor Day weekend

The Daily News will close Monday September 2 for Labor Day while publishing on schedule. Special early deadlines apply for both Monday and Tuesday editions to allow staff time with family. Submissions for Monday and Tuesday must reach the office by Noon Friday August 30. retail ads by 11:30 a.m. Friday. Value Guide ads by 2:30 p.m. Friday. classifieds by 12 noon Saturday. The Monday edition will still hit stands on Monday afternoon. The office reopens Tuesday morning.
