Light rain and cooler air moved through Richardson marking the season change. Weekend storms produced over half an inch of precipitation, with Sunday night the heaviest since June 13, while the forecast calls for a 20 percent chance of more thundershowers and warm upper 90s highs through Tuesday.
Rich ardson women excelled in the fair with Mrs. R J Cordell winning Best of Baking for a bundt butter cake. Winners span butter cakes, sponge and angel food, chiffon, cookies, pies, yeast breads, and teens entries, each receiving flour and a first prize sugar sack. Cordell also earned a silver tray.
A 42 foot yacht Vida Lee III with 10 aboard sank on its maiden SCUBA voyage along Texas lower Gulf coast. Coerced by darkness and radar gaps, Coast Guard searches failed to spot them until a rescuer paddled 8 miles to alert authorities. Divers later found exhausted survivors on Padre Island beach.
U S Air Force planes bombed a North Vietnamese site 31 miles from Communist China, the closest raid to the border so far as about 250 tons of explosives were dropped in a series. Paratroopers with tanks and artillery escorted a Vietnamese convoy to Kontum, the first since five weeks of fighting in the region. Kontum lies 270 miles north of Saigon as U S forces press the war with mixed ground actions across the central highlands.
Norman Dodds, known as the gypsies champion in the House of Commons, died of a heart attack at 61. A 20 year MP, his death narrows Labour’s parliamentary majority to two votes. He backed gypsy rights and in 1962 helped establish a permanent camp near his constituency about 30 miles from London. Gypsies mourned as caravans drew their curtains.
In Los Angeles 1000 National Guardsmen kept peace after a weekend of relative calm following mass rioting that began August 11. Two shootings occurred though not directly tied to the riot, which left seven dead and over 50 million dollars in damage. Notable incidents include the fatal shot of James E. Henderson and the wounding of Harry Heckman with an 18 year old suspect charged. A blue ribbon commission led by John A. McCone planned to meet this week to probe the riot.
Washington UPI report on President Johnson’s new crime study commission launching a 17 month inquiry next month. Experts question how far police protection can be expanded before becoming a liability and note local conditions, duties, and citizen tolerance shape the appropriate force size. James Vorenberg says cities could quadruple police, but asks what level of crime we are willing to live with to avoid a police state.
Texas Instruments will announce more than 50 new products at the Western Electronic Show and Convention in San Francisco. TI emphasizes integrated circuits as the next step beyond the transistor. The company shows 25 new products this week, including two low cost digital series for industrial use and a 553 Dynamic Test System for realistic component testing.
A note found on St. Columbkine's Church convent steps and three radios recovered after looting in Los Angeles indicates an anonymous return. The items were stolen from a pawn shop at 5500 South Central Avenue during the riots.
AFL-CIO education director Lawrence Rogin predicts city school systems will gain under the Supreme Court's one man one vote doctrine for state legislative apportionment. He says urban schools have been starved by rural legislatures and that desegregation remains incomplete. Rogin credits Health Secretary John W. Gardner as moving in the right direction.
