Richardson police filed charges today on Alton Wayne Hill, 39, and a male youth, both of Garland, for theft over $50 from First Christian Church at 601 E Main. The pair allegedly begged for food and money at churches then stole tools, a television, and lawn equipment. They are held in the city jail.
Relyea Companies announced the sale of 12 acres at the Southeast corner and 10 acres at the Northeast corner of Jupiter and Arapaho Roads to the Strief Company. The deals total nearly one million dollars. Strief plans an office shopping center on both lots. tracts include Fox & Jacobs Construction and Centennial Homes developments.
The Richardson Independent School District will keep bus schedules and routes for about 4000 riders the same as last year. One new route will serve Berkner High School area north of Arapaho Road and nearby housing developments. Routes start Monday August 21 with 34 routes daily covering 275540 miles yearly across Richardson Dallas and Garland.
The Richardson City Council approved 35 percent lot coverage variances for a Campbell Street subdivision adjacent to UT Dallas, despite a Plan Commission denial of 30 foot front building lines in parts of the tract zoned R1500M. The council also set Sept. 11 for Arledge commercial zoning and for Townehomes RA1100M zoning, while approving plats for Canyon Creek Square Shopping Center and Prestonwood Central.
Assistant City Manager Bob Hughey announced the new municipal budget would be filed today with City Secretary Virginia Gruben as the deadline under the city charter looms. City Manager Sherrill and staff began budget work with department heads last month. council will ratify at a public hearing at least 10 days after publication, no earlier than the first Monday in September, with possible tax rate changes disclosed only by officials.
The Texas Research Foundation trustees met at 10 a.m. in the Republic National Bank Building to decide asset and property division between the University of Texas at Dallas and Texas A&M University. The plan would grant A&M 380 acres for an agricultural research and extension center and UT Dallas 275 acres for an Institute for Environmental Sciences.
Richardson Independent School District trustees approved the 1972 73 budget with no property tax increase. Taxable property in the district rose to 764,565,230 from 715,885,010, with 52.2 percent of expenses paid by the district and the rest by the state. Plant maintenance gains were the largest rate increase, while costs like transportation and attendance counting were scrutinized. The district expects to begin paying down debt and noted substantial savings from computerized attendance counting. Receipts from the state totaled 12,068,913.
Richardson area forecast calls for partly cloudy skies through Wednesday with a 20 percent rain chance. Overnight low near 75, high temperatures around 95 on Wednesday.
Glenn Scott told Richardson Rotarians that Direct Distance Dialing has evolved to picture phones and lasers. He cited polyethylene life, unbreakable Trimline sets, and the shift from lead cables to safer plastics to support mass calls within metropolitan areas.
