Dallas area unemployment stood at 3 percent in June 1973, down from 3.6 percent a year earlier, with nonagricultural employment rising by 7,600 from May to June and total state unemployment up to 4.1 percent. Wages for durable and nondurable goods workers increased, indicating stronger late spring to summer job prospects.
Richland College enters its second year at the lakeside campus near Richardson and Garland with expanded courses in Community Services and Career Divisions. New programs include Human Services and Teacher Aide, evening academic offerings, a Saturday College, and pilot BankAmericard payments.
The Ridgewood Homeowner's Association and Citizens Organized for the Plane Environment form a coordinating group to organize opposition to the Richardson proposed airport. Leaders Randy Rainwater and Art Fogg say meetings will align campaigns, funding, and possible alternatives including a smaller runway. COPE seeks environmental studies by impartial bodies and urges federal agency input.
Richardson officials say railroad crossing upkeep is being reviewed after a local resident called Spring Valley Road crossings bumpy for cars. Garland reports six recent train car accidents blamed partly on faulty warning flashers, with two crossings already upgraded. Beef shortages persist with wholesalers and small retailers relying on custom kill plans, while grocery prices are forecast to rise about 20 percent in 1973. The regime aims to curb inflation without universal wage controls, with Phase Five promised to wind down controls and return to a free market.

About 65 property owners in southern Wildwood Oaks Addition face a public hearing on funding a city sewer line to fix septic problems. The plan estimates a $157,000 project with property owners contributing roughly $90,000, the city covering the rest plus $28,000 for street repairs.
