Thousands of students in Richardson and Plano Independent School Districts prepare for the annual back-to-school trek. The issue highlights preparations for high school students and those heading to junior colleges and universities nearby and abroad.
The Plano Independent School District begins 1971 72 preparations with Dr John W McFarland delivering the keynote at a dinner at Ammie E Wilson Junior High. More than 420 teachers report to Plano High School for three days of staff meetings ahead of opening on August 16. Richardson and Plano districts provide guides with school dress codes lunch menus and football schedules.
Dallas County Selective Service says September draft call will be for physicals only and Congress not back until about September 13. No induction authority exists now and lotteries cap inductions at 125 and physicals at 175. 18 year olds must register within five days of birth date.
The Richardson forecast calls for clear to partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures tonight and Thursday. Lows will be in the lower 70s and Thursday's highs in the middle 70s.
The Richardson Daily News announces its relocation to 101 West Main Street at the corner of West Main and Interurban Street. Entrance to the new offices is on Interurban Street, just a block west of the former location, and the new telephone number is 234-1131.
Maria Eugenia Santander, a 17 year old Venezuelan Rotary Exchange student, enrolls at Richardson High School. She will study English and core classes while living with the John M. Holladay Jr. family in Dallas. Maria has studied in France and several European countries and hopes to attend an American university after a year in North Texas.
Richardson Education Association leads TSTA District 10 with 1528 RISD teachers. District president Jack F. Gibson promotes pay scales, differential staffing, duty free lunch, and improved legislation to attract qualified educators. Gibson rejects union tactics and aims for continued influence ahead of the District Workshop on September 11 and the Dallas convention on October 28-29.
Richardson High School students will collect schedules in the cafeteria on assigned days with hours from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Seniors on August 12, juniors on August 13, and sophomores on August 14. A mailed information packet includes enrollment cards and fee lists. The Eagle yearbook will be distributed August 16 from 1 to 6 p.m. in front of the RHS library.
Funeral services for J. C. Wells Jr. 63 of Renner will be held at 2 30 p m Thursday in Restland Funeral Chapel. He died Tuesday afternoon in a Dallas hospital after a heart attack. Wells a longtime Renner resident and postmaster for 35 years was active in civic work and belonged to Scottish Rite Bodies. He led a movement to annex Renner to Richardson. Survived by wife a son James L Wells of Dallas a daughter Norma Wells of San Francisco stepmother Mrs Clay Wells and half brother Robert Wells all of Renner. He also served on Scottish Rite committees and was a member of the Plano-Wylie-Allen group.
