After three days with afternoon highs over 100 degrees relief is forecast for parts of Texas including the Panhandle and South Texas. Early readings ranged in the 70s and 80s with most spots in the 90s. Presidio and Wichita Falls led at 106 degrees.
Howard Weaver is named Assistant City Manager for Personnel in Richardson. A Texas Tech graduate, he comes from Litton Industries as Industrial Relations Representative and previously held city roles in Lubbock. He and his wife live with two sons at 2105 Flat Creek Drive.
Dr. Dan Klesken, a visitor at the Richardson Noon Toastmasters, won the Table Topics trophy during the Continen tal Inn luncheon. Harold Gilliatt took Best Speaker for "Convertibles and You" as others like Dr. John Hoffman and Larry McHargue spoke on topics including The Earth's Atmosphere and How Hands Help. John Hagen earned Best Evaluation, with Dale Chandler as Toastmaster and Wendell McCraken as master evaluator. The next meeting is set for Wednesday near Continental Inn inviting all wishing to improve speaking skills.
John Shuler director and chaplain of Goodwill Industries will be guest speaker at the Senior Citizens Club semi monthly meeting. The 1:30 PM event at the Dallas Federal Community Room in Heights Shopping Center will cover Goodwill activities aiding the handicapped toward self support.
Richardson city awards petroleum contracts to American Oil American Petrofina and Sinclair Refining totaling 44754.50 saving 2740 over second bids. TP and L granted special permit for a new East Side substation. fence bids rejected for Huffhines Park and six baseball diamonds. visitors discuss lake zoning and setback questions near Blue Lake Circle.
Wednesday night at 7 30 p m the annual Teen Talent Show aligned with the Richardson Community Fair will rehearse at Greenville Avenue Auditorium. Gary Hancock coordinating with the Jaycees says acts so far include dancers a piano performer and a teen combo with a goal of 15 acts for August 15 19. Local teens are invited to join the rehearsal and prepare an act.
The Richardson YMCA adds Mike Bergus and Doug Scherer to its youth staff. Bergus, relocating from Fort Worth with his family, holds a BA in Religion and Psychology and will direct Hi Y activities and World Service. Scherer, new head of summer football camp registration, has a BS in Physical Education and prior experience as a teacher and aquatic director.
Police investigated auto thefts burglaries and shoplifting over the weekend. Stolen vehicles were recovered in multiple locations including a 2500 sport coupe from Avis Rental and two other cars tied to Dallas and Denton thefts. Two teens were jailed for shoplifting. two men arrested for breaking into a service station coin machine and related auto theft. three arrests for drunkenness.
Twenty nine college teachers of geology and related sciences from across the nation attend a three week short course in earth sciences at the Southwest Center For Advanced Studies in Richardson. The program, begun yesterday, covers advances in Earth structure using geophysical and geochemical methods with lectures from Center staff and visiting industrial laboratories. Activities include high pressure high temperature experiments, mineral synthesis, rock-age measurements, mass spectrometry, and rock magnetism facilities. The Geosciences division is led by Prof. Anton L. Hales, with project support from the National Science Foundation.
