Pilot project in deaf education begins this fall
The Regional Program in Deaf Education launches this year serving 58 audiotorially impaired children across RISD and adjacent districts. Brentfield Elementary houses most students, with 10 older youths at Richardson West Junior High and Richardson High. Eligible students have mild to profound hearing loss and benefit from specialized teaching. The program is state mandated and fully funded by the Texas Education Agency, with Callier Center conducting assessments and Region 10 consultants providing workshops.

Richardson parks and recreation announces fall plans at 711 Arapaho Rd. Two events headline the season the Cottonwood Art Festival October 4 and 5 at Cottonwood Park and the Halloween Spook House at the rec center October 31. Spook House is free for children but not recommended for preschoolers and carries a KG rating. The fall class schedule runs from late August into early September with sessions for preschool through adult levels including swimming at Cottonwood Pool with modest fees. Gymnastics registration begins August 12 at 6 p.m. and other classes August 13 at 6 p.m., with a second fall session starting November 3 and registrations in late October.

Blaze hits residence on Greenville Avenue duplex
A fire at 503A S. Greenville on Wednesday caused about 2000 in damage to the duplex interior and exterior finish. Richardson Fire Marshal M L Todd said the blaze, reported at 5 22 p m and under control by 5 30 p m, left the dog inside with smoke inhalation but likely to survive. no occupants were home and the cause is under investigation.

Richardson Fire Department July activity review
July fire calls in Richardson totaled 107 a drop from June and from July 1974. Ambulance and fire rescue calls dominated with 97 and 107 respectively. Inspections covered 48 businesses 34 homes 22 schools and 12 special hazards plus 35 complaints. Weed inspections reached 1 890 and occupancy certificates were issued for 23 dwellings. Fire causes centered on electrical appliances and wiring careless smoking and fireworks while the year to date shows juveniles and flammable liquids as top factors. Property losses reached 73 100 in July and 251 747 year to date with 12 injuries and no deaths. Training hours ran high at 1 057 in July and 11 035 for the year. Municipal court filings grew with 38 cases in July and 102 year to date, including three felonies and fines totaling 731. More than 200 people mostly juveniles have been questioned for burning this year.
