A virtuous merchant named Dorval, heir to a fortune and educated in honor, rejects venal temptations in trade. He champions integrity over expediency, rebuking frauds on revenue and evasion, and persuades a reform that saves government funds. His benevolence deepens, yet exposure to calamity drains his strength and tests his moral bench.
A tale of Dorval, once ruined, shows his steadfast honesty during bankruptcy. After avoiding creditors’ schemes and surrendering his estate, he gains support from Mr. Wilson, rescues a cherished ring, and rises again through prudence, virtue, and a noble marriage to Miss Cielia Wilson.
