Schoeneman Reverts to Not Guilty in Murder Case
Verne Schoeneman engaged Des Moines attorney Jas Parsons to defend him in a second degree murder trial. He initially pleaded guilty to assault with intent to commit great bodily injury in Sioux county court, judge Bradley set sentencing for November 23, but the plea was withdrawn and a plea of not guilty entered, with trial likely soon.

Cloudburst Destroys Northwest Iowa Towns and Farmland
A severe cloudburst drenched northwest Iowa from Sioux Center to Hawarden on Friday, washing out road grades and bridges, flooding main streets, and killing livestock. Mina Brunsting, 13, drowned near Hull as the river rose five to seven feet, while Hawarden suffered extensive property loss and the local newspaper office was flooded. Freight cars derailed near Sheldon and floodwaters trapped workers as communities faced widespread damage to crops, buildings, and infrastructure.

The Red Cross has taken charge of Hawarden relief while Sioux County officers contributed $300 for immediate needs. Bedding and supplies were rushed from branches with five truckloads heading to Hawarden and purchases in Boyden funded by local donations. The National Red Cross and representative H. B. Williamson oversee operations as peace and survey workers assess ongoing needs.

Hospers Jeweler and Son Drown Near Million Dollar Corner
Sip Terpstra a Hospers jeweler and his eight year old son Eugene drowned Friday evening while driving from Hospers to Sioux Center. Their car failed to exit a flooded wash-out and with rising water they climbed atop the car and were swept away. The boy’s body was found Tuesday. the man's body remained missing at first.
