Train Surges Through Snow Drifts as Midwest Storm Halts Traffic

A diesel powered train sped through a cut as drifts sent snow showering the front of the engine. The Midwest storm shut down most traffic, with rail service continuing though delayed. Governor Anderson declared a 86 county emergency in South Dakota for possible cattle losses as aid was awaited. The storm began Friday in Sioux City, freezing highways and stranding Oscar Levant showgoers overnight. Sioux County roads remained passable thanks to good drainage and grading, while tank wagon routes opened by Monday.
