From Soldiers Letters To Institute Notice in 1898
I close from Chickamauga in July 1898 writing home about hospital duties six patients and jokes among troops. Mention Santiago surrender Bert Swafford Mr Acheson and John Smith deserter. Then county Institute notices urging teachers to attend sessions starting August with registration one dollar exams on 6th and 14th, experience requirements and fees, and arrangements for boarding and books.

Talk by James Armstrong on Northwest Canada lands
Mr James Armstrong of Toronto and Yorkton Colony manager visited for several days and spoke at City Hall about the northwest. He praised cheap lands and free homes, cattle and horse raising, and the grass quality for stock. Rev Acheson chaired. Binks the phrenologist spoke on local interests. Armstrong praised Canada and the shared frontier, then began return trip home.
