Sioux County’s 1926 report shows 103 409.66 spent on bridges and culverts with 60 825.03 on county road work and 5788.48 on special cases. It lists miles graded and costs, accident losses from floods, and county equipment values. Court notices include notes on debts, rents, probate, and upcoming hearings with several marriage licenses listed.
A community street sale will be held in Boyden on February 26 under direction of A. H. Van Zee and Otto Rouwenhorst auctioneers. Items for the sale should be listed before February 16 with either auctioneer or Mr. L. Rens Jr. of Boyden, or at the office.
The Farmers Co-Operative Creamery held its annual meeting at the town hall with about 225 stockholders present. Shares were raised to 40.00 each. Henry Vagts Henry Schloetje Henry Kortekamp and R. Kamminga were re-elected directors with Albert Dethmers replacing John Rensink. Jack Frisbie of Sheldon spoke on cream care and separator maintenance.
The Parent Teachers Association will meet next Wednesday evening at the Public school. An interesting program has been arranged and it is hoped many will attend. The program includes violin and cornet duet by Paul McCrum and S G Vanden Brink, and readings and talks by local teachers and Supt Hoeven.
The Jan Scholten Estate sale held last week Friday drew a huge crowd and brisk bidding. Receipts totaled 6876 dollars with horses selling from 87 to 90 dollars, milch cows up to 105 dollars, brood sows at 39 dollars, and stock pigs at 19.50 each. Benj J Meylink of Hull led the sale with Paul T McCrum and S G Vanden Brink as clerks.
Losses from hog cholera in 1926 were the heaviest since 1913, totaling about 859 000 head. Other hog diseases added roughly 1 012 000 losses. A serum shortage and a widespread outbreak last fall contributed to the severity.
John W. Carey, former Rock Rapids Review editor, becomes associate editor at the Sioux City Journal, returning to his first journalism love after ten years running the Review.
Sheriff Hugo Synhorst and Deputy Harry Dykstra of Sioux County chased two bandits after a Perkins robbery. They engaged a gun battle near the Mil lion Dollar Corners, wounding Thorngren and leading to two arrests. The Van Roeker general merchandise store entry was via a broken back door panel and merchandise was found ready to load in the car. Thorngren’s wound is serious but not considered fatal.
