Cigarettes Lead to Insanity Ruling in Des Moines
The county sanity commission ordered Joseph Stine to the Clarinda insane asylum after determining his mental state was caused by heavy cigarette use. Stine, who came from Cleveland to Des Moines seeking work, reportedly smoked scores daily, with a new cigarette ready as soon as one was discarded. The panel cited the habit as the basis for commitment to the asylum.
