Heavy hailstorm last Wednesday evening damaged corn beans and windrowed grain within a three mile radius of Boyden. Large piles of hailstones collected in ditches, two feet deep in spots, with some stones still in fields after thawing on Sunday.
The wedding of Frances Van Meeteren daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C Van Meeteren of Boyden to Pvt Alvin J Kosters of Hull took place at United Presbyterian church Tuesday evening. Sheridan Township officials and their wives hosted a surprise honor for Mrs. Walter Dickevers at John Balkema’s home to thank her for kindness to Shirley Balkema who has been crippled. Albert L. Winter welcomed guests and readings were given before a warm presentation of a blanket.
A Sioux County meeting set groundwork for a county wide chest X-ray survey to start late September. Rev. Leroy Nattres of Orange City urged broad participation from seventh grade students up, with mobile X-ray units operating for ten days funded by Christmas seal donations.
C A Auchstetter of Hospers was elected County Office Manager for Sioux County PMA, resigning as Chairman. He will oversee daily county office operations and execute committee policies. Auchstetter has 22 years as a farm owner operator, is Hospers High School graduate, and former Hospers Board of Education president. The new county committee includes Jesse Yates, Ed J Schmidt, John B Draager, and Herman Vander Maten with Schmidt also named Federal Crop Insurance Director.
Iowa mourns the death of Leroy Moomey aged 102 at Kolna on July 22. The long lived resident was among the state’s oldest citizens and is survived by relatives.
Pvt. Alvin Klein, son of John Klein, completed basic combat training at Camp Gordon Georgia. He studied infantry tactics weapons and army subjects to prepare for military duties at the Signal Corps Replacement Training Center, a leading source of communications specialists.
