Boyden school reports attendance returning to normal after a scarlet fever outbreak. Lower grades recover most absentees with no new cases. Senior class plans a Friday 8 PM performance of The Girls Take Over in the high school auditorium.
Members of the U P Ladies Aid will pack boxes for church members in military service next Thursday at the parsonage. Each member brings cookies or canned goods. The Boyden Hardware Store suffered a fire Tuesday evening at about 7 30 with damage to stock from smoke and water. Insurance likely to cover losses. Grace Bruns was informed her husband was promoted to sergeant and stationed in India.
Multiple notices list seed and eating potatoes for sale by Mrs. John Stegeman. Also offered are a matched team of horses with harness, a Parcelaut Hybrid Seed Corn at Dethmers Implement Co., a McCormick tractor and Massey Harris equipment, 200 bushels Red Wing Flax with 86 percent germination by John D. Stegeman, and a request for old iron, metals, and old horses by Herman Ooldenkamp in Hull.
Spring arrives as students share stories and crafts from Children of Other Lands projects. Second graders finish reading work books. several students excel in spelling. seventh and eighth graders move to Facts and Story Readers. Cedar Rapids Presbytery meeting notes include officer elections and a General Assembly delegation.
Mr and Mrs S G Vanden Brink quietly marked their 25th anniversary at home Monday with relatives. Out of town guests included Mr and Mrs Harry Beldt Matlock Mr and Mrs Al Rouwenhorst Sheldon and Mrs W Rouwenhorst and daughter Cynthia Langmeyer Hospers. Friday evening the couple were surprised when members of the Boyden United Presbyterian Missionary Society and their husbands paid a social visit.
Notice to all property owners that rubbish ashes debris and obstructions must be removed from alleys and streets bordering their property by May 4 1944. If not removed the town will act to clear the nuisance and charge the expense as special taxes against the abutting property. John Rensink Sr Mayor.
All applications for February milk subsidies must reach the AAA Office by May 1 1944. March and April applications will be submitted together during May. Mrs Wm Kruse Jr and Mrs Lawrence Wulf were callers on Monday at the Eldora Heitritter home.
Mrs Henry Auberg and her son Richard visited the George Gaugert home at Herron Lake Minnesota. Word reached Mrs Wm Meyn that Jake Van Leeuwen had a major abdominal operation at St Marys Hospital Rochester Minnesota on April 11. His room number is 450 for mail.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Stientjes visited at the home of Dr and Mrs. Will Van Zanten in Brighton, a southern Iowa town known for Dr Van Zanten’s fine medical practice.
Mrs. Melvin Harman nee Henrietta Van Veldhuizen died Sunday April 16 at Home hospital Slayton Minnesota aged 34 years seven months 23 days. She leaves husband and three sons Rodney Roger nine year old twins and Darald four. Le Roy preceded her in death February 13 1942. Surviving relatives include her parents Henry J. Van Veldhuizen and Frances Kleinheselink of Boyden. three sisters Janet Gerrit Aalberts Orange City Elizabeth Van Velzen Boyden Minnie Dethmers Boyden. brothers Jake Sioux Falls Henry in Italy. Funeral April 18 at home then Lake Wilson Methodist church officiated by Pastor Moritz. Interment Lake Wilson little cemetery. Local attendees listed from Boyden Orange City Sheldon and nearby towns.
We thank relatives and friends for cards letters and floral offerings sent to our wife and mother while in the hospital and at the funeral Melvin Harman and sons.
Sioux County Sunday School Convention set for April 27 1944 at Middleburg Iowa with afternoon sessions including worship training group conferences and a business meeting. Dr Kermit Myers captain in the Army will take over the Sheldon practice after the war and not resume until then. The Sioux County Federation of Women's Clubs met in Orange City with representative leaders and a program on defense and salvage projects.

The Sioux County Federated Women's Clubs sponsored county Art and Poetry Contest at the Orange City convention. Boyden entrants earned forty two awards across grades from primary to adult categories with judges Miss Helen Grotwald and Mrs. Percy Tanfried naming ribbons.
Dr John DeBey dies in Orange City on Monday leaving the town with a single practicing surgeon. Henry Auberg attended a dinner at Jake Van Houte’s home on Sunday.
