City council met in clerk’s office with Mayor presiding. Appointments included Joe Kuyper as General Utility Man and Marshall, Dr Balkema as health physician, weed commissioner R Smit, and various committee assignments. Treasurer bond renewed, insurance policy renewed, March 1938 finances reported, bills approved, and Clerk salary set. Ralph Smit qualified for office April 7, 1988.
John H. Dykstra, Republican candidate for Fourth District supervisor, seeks votes in Sheridan Grant Capel Lynn townships and Boyder. Woman’s Missionary Society met at Jackson Hotel. Mabel Janssen and Gertrude Brink attended Rural Teacher’s Institute in Genesee City.
Ella Arlene Rensink of Hull was a week end guest of Dorothy Van den Brink in the S. G. Van Den Brink home, sharing a social visit Saturday.
The Ladies Aid hosts the Annual Birthday Supper at the church on Thursday evening. Slides of the Oberammergau Passion Play were shown to attendees.
School notes detail music contest results at Storm Lake with Girls Glee Club and Dorothy Rensink earning Excellent and the Band Good. Plans to compete next year are mentioned along with eighth grade band prospects. Also covered are baseball prep, devotion chair, Economics topics on monetary problems, literature short stories, Latin Caesar study, harmony sequences, Business Law topics, Economics tests, Weekly News Review, American History units, Factoring in Algebra, Home Economics crafts, and General Science workbook work.
The report notes reading short stories discussed orally with O Henry as a favored author. Home Economics projects due Friday. A Thursday business training test on transportation of goods and related topics is expected.
Mrs. Helen Vanderburg attended the County Meeting of the Woman's Field Army for Cancer Control in Orange City on Wednesday. Mrs. Walter Vander Wilt of Rock Rapids was the speaker.
Primary grades note bees in readings, Elson Readers done, children drawing favorites, learning an Easter song and a little duck tune. The Junior Health Club met Friday, Ivan named president, Myrna Mae vice president, health pins made, LaVonne read a health story, tulips crafted, and ten pupils scored 100 in spelling.
The report lists Fifth and Sixth grades studying arithmetic and physiology respectively. It notes a rabbit and bird border in the room and plans to draw chickens and eggs for Easter. It mentions student drill scores in arithmetic and spelling and weekly readings, with focus on Iowa History and citizenship essays.
The Women’s Club sponsors an Easter Egg Rolling in the Park Saturday afternoon after Bible Classes. Miss Ruthye Jackson serves as club chairman. The event is free to all children in the community.
Red Cross urges households to save clothes for donation as a house to house collection canvass will be conducted soon by local Red Cross committee.
The New Town Council met Monday April 4 1938 in the clerk’s office at noon with Mayor Paul T McCrum and councilmen Bergman Maris Dykstra and Vander Haar present. Smit was absent. The mayor’s bond for 500 dollars was approved and S G Vanden Brink was named clerk for two years. Farmers Savings Bank Boyden Iowa was named town depository. Monthly meetings set for the first Monday at 7 30 PM and adjournment noted.
The letter urges constituents to contact their senator and congressman to oppose amendments allowing government departments to buy and serve oleomargarine. It notes two new proposals at stake: St Elizabeths Hospital in Washington and War department general appropriation. House already opposed by 289 to 15 vote. Also notes a Good Friday service in Boyden at 8 pm April 15.
On next Sabbath the United Presbyterian church choir will perform Easter songs and the pastor will deliver an Easter message. Easter offering envelopes have been distributed to support missions. Those not using weekly offerings are invited to participate through the envelopes to aid the Missionary budget.
Rev Brink spent Monday in Orange City on church business. Mrs Emma Stutzman spent the week end with the Frank Connor family in Sanborn.
Mr. and Mrs. S. G. Vanden Brink and daughter Dorothy and Ella Arlene Rensink of Hull were Sunday dinner guests in the Harry Beldt home in Matlock.
The report notes that Rev. and Mrs. B. D. Hielbried called on Rev. and Mrs. Brink last Friday, recording a social visit between the two clergy couples.
