What Iowa Did Back In 1861
When Congress declared war in 1861 the Iowa Legislature appropriated 500000 to raise a volunteer army. Iowa furnished the Union 78000 men and spent 486000 of that amount. Today the legislature appropriated 1000000 as population reaches about 2250000. If demand for men rises in a future conflict Otawla would supply 230000 men.
