Ford 1957 Line Adds V8 Power and Styling Upgrades
Ford's 1957 lineup features a standard 212 hp Thunderbird V-8 for Fairlane and wagon, a 190 hp V-8 for Custom series, both with two barrel carbs, plus a 144 hp Milepipe Maker six on all models. Engines offer standard, overdrive, or Fordomatic transmissions. New carburetion, combustion, and exhaust design boost economy, with advanced styling including wide hooded headlights, slant grille, streamlined wheel openings, wraparound windshield, and distinctive rear fins. Hardtop bodies use slender pillars. Victorias are pillarless. Station wagons gain 20 percent more opening rear, with a one-pull tailgate latch. Special side mouldings distinguish five series. color options include 19 two-tone or 12 solid colors. Interior matches upholstery to paint. safety features improve with an updated instrument panel, crash cushions, reinforced door latches, and a smaller lower steering wheel. Roof bows strengthened, front-hinged hoods prevent accidental openings, and the hood release moves to the instrument panel. Fresh air intake relocated to cowling to reduce fumes. Optional features in 1957 include power steering, brakes, seats, windows, air conditioning, tinted glass, six and twelve-tube radios, and heaters.
