The Allies' invasion of Italy pushed German forces from Naples to Rome as Mussolini's government collapsed. Soviet and Ukrainian fronts intensified as the Nazis retreated along the Dnieper and Donetz corridors, with Ukraine’s wheat and cotton regions affected by devastation and requisition. Moscow celebrated a Soviet salute to mark gains.
Civilian stocks such as lamps lanterns heating gear and radiators were set aside by a War Production Board directive for civilian use.
