Landon blasts tax load as New Deal burden grows
Buffalo N Y Gov All M Landon of Kansas charged the present administration with raising the share of government costs borne by those earning 25 dollars a week or less by 25 percent. He told about 25,000 listeners that direct taxes on net incomes should fund government and warned about hidden taxes. He cited 1932 taxes as 59 cents of every dollar and 1936 at 32 cents from direct taxes, and accused the New Deal of excess spending and waste. He urged simple bookkeeping and clearer accountability.
