Four masked men robbed Southern Pacific Express No 10 near Cochise Arizona Sunday night. They blew open the safe with dynamite after forcing the express messenger to open his car. The train halted, cars damaged, bandits fled north on foot. A posse pursued but no clues to identities were found.
The Mallory steamer Lampasés arrived from Galveston with ninety five passengers. Sixty boarded at Key West and were taken to Swieburne Island Hospital with yellow fever symptoms. Twenty nine Galveston passengers and one Key West passenger were sent to the city quarantine. Burley and three others were ill and treated with yellow fever serum.
Bishop Willis, representing London, notes ongoing unrest and a fragile state of affairs in Samda. He cites rival powers exerting influence, colonial tensions, and delayed progress as warships Torch and Tauruse arrive near Apia. The Tauranga is relieved by Pylades. American vessels are absent.
William E. Pape, longtime parks chief in St. Louis politics, was shot at his home Sunday night by Henry Fry, a local huckster who later killed himself. The remains of Samuel Merrill ex governor of Iowa arrived Sept 7 from California and lay in state at the state house rotunda for four hours before a Plymouth Congregational Church service. State officers and veterans served as pallbearers. Interment at Woolland cemetery.
The cornerstone of the new Mt. Zinch at Manson was laid Sept 8 by Bishop Metiabe with appropriate ceremonies. The church is to be built with brick structure costing about $1,000.
Constables Schuler and Cameron of Falley Junction were held up on a Rock Island train while taking John and Charles Roe from Valley Junction to Commerce. The two prisoners disarmed the officers, forced the conductor to stop, and fled toward unknown parts after taking revolvers and loose change.
A riotous stabbing occurred at Tara during construction work on the Port Dodgeaig Omaha Rail line. Foreman Ea Barlow stabbed Grant Bradford in the arm after Bradford refused to work without breakfast. Bradford survived. Barlow fled and remains at large.
