Food ration changes foreseen for 1942 43

Americans will share less food during the next ten months than in 1942 to 1943 but on average will receive as much as in 1935 to 1939. Civilians will get portions, with the army allotted 3 percent and tend-lease 10 percent. Servicemen eat about 54 pounds daily. Government notes start of wheat sales from July and shipments via Canada and the northwest.

Eight Labor Board members oppose wage contract with miners

Eight public and employer members of the War Labor Board voted against approving a wage contract between Illinois coal operators and the United Mine Workers, denying underground travel pay but granting time and a half for work over 25 hours weekly. The board approved 25 cent daily free equipment and services and higher vacation pay, with miners urged to go to court for underground payment claims.

Jewish population in Axis Europe declines sharply

The American Jewish Congress reports the Jewish population in Axis controlled Europe has fallen from 8,305,000 to about 2,200,000. Of five million missing, about three million are dead, 1,800,000 sent deep into Soviet Russia, and 180,000 have emigrated to other places.

Fighting France: Administrators to be recognized

The French Committee of National Liberation operating from Algiers will be recognized by the United States Great Britain and Russia as an administrative agency over parts of the French empire it controls. This follows a power struggle between De Gaulle and Giraud, now united under De Gaulle with Giraud directing the military.
