Allied troops push through steep Alpine terrain and ruined towns as heavy rains slow progress toward Bavaria. German defenses remain strong in the south while Russian advances pressure Hungary. a large push targets East Prussia as Patton’s and Montgomery’s forces chase remnants. Harvest in Greece prepares for the No. 1 crop, with Corinth currants framing the region’s bounty.
United Nations alliance plans for postwar security include major powers like the U S Britain Russia and China and later France taking large roles in a new world peace organization. A four power executive council would oversee peaceful settlements or force if needed with an international court and a social committee to promote rede and inter national cooperation.
The mill is described as the largest single source of gross farm income at 15 percent of all farm income in 1543, exceeding cattle and hogs and far above eggs and wheat. It notes that one in fifteen U.S. families relies on milk for a livelihood and that milk products account for over 25 percent of annual per person consumption of 1700 pounds.

Elson Jellison of Balts Texas is hailed as Star Farmer of 1948 after a seven year effort that included a gilt sow, savings, and planting ten acres of cotton. By 1942 he helped his father buy a 260 acre farm and later added 270 acres before his army call in August. He and his 15 year old wife noted their gratitude with a cheerful donation card.
Farm mortgage debt fell by about 2 billion dollars from 1949 to 1944 the Agriculture Department reports. Of the total reduction about 952 million occurred in 1942 and 1943 due to strong crop incomes. By January 1, 1944 the debt was nearly 3 percent below the previous year, 14.4 percent below January 1, 1940, and almost 48 percent under the 1923 peak.
