Milk Dominates Farm Income And Diet In The 1543 Era

The Department of Agriculture reports a record 1944 harvest with corn at 3.196 billion bushels and wheat 1.109 billion, sorghum 15 million, oats 1.19 billion, barley 287 million. total grain output over 5.6 billion bushels, up about 400 million from last year, plus rising rice fruits vegetables peanuts and tree nuts. Livestock marketing expected to be high, cannery supplies uncertain, civilians faced smaller stocks unless army orders drop. citrus up 7 percent, hay beans soybeans flaxseed potatoes and sweet potatoes above near normal.

Star Farmer Named as the Star Farmer of 1948

Elson Jellison of Balts Texas is hailed as Star Farmer of 1948 after a seven year effort that included a gilt sow, savings, and planting ten acres of cotton. By 1942 he helped his father buy a 260 acre farm and later added 270 acres before his army call in August. He and his 15 year old wife noted their gratitude with a cheerful donation card.

Farm Mortgage Totals Decline Across Wartime Years

Farm mortgage debt fell by about 2 billion dollars from 1949 to 1944 the Agriculture Department reports. Of the total reduction about 952 million occurred in 1942 and 1943 due to strong crop incomes. By January 1, 1944 the debt was nearly 3 percent below the previous year, 14.4 percent below January 1, 1940, and almost 48 percent under the 1923 peak.
