Vernon High School Edition Highlights Friendship and Activities

Vernon Kanawha boys split a doubleheader with Vernon winning 56 to 49. The issue credits staff editor Jim Zweifel and Rae Ann French, with reporters listed, and features a student essay on friendship, plus calendar items for late November and a note on Miss Nefzgar’s hearing tests for grades three, six, and nine.

Local Team Cruises in Close Games and Pep Rally Cheer

Arnold Wigans scored 39 points leading the team in a season opener with Jim Guy adding 14. Free throws hit 48 percent on 10 of 21. Girls edged Kans with 33 to 32. Mary Gilligan led with 15 points and Janice Marty had 14. Cheerleaders Judy Brayton Eleanor Schwidder Tong Hefty and a small pep band prepared for pep meetings as Vernon hosts WesleyKAN.

Perfect Spelling Winners Shine in Grade Program

First and second grade students with perfect spelling were John Carlson Steven Clapham Patricia John Mary Sampson Edward Steil and Jerry Eimers. They enjoyed a half day vacation on Friday. The grades presented a short play for the PTA Friday evening titled The Shoe Children’s Gift.

Birthday fun at school sparks spelling contest balance

Third and Fourth Lowell McCoy recently celebrated birthdays and hid treats for a treasure hunt. Celeste Ehrhardt visited a classroom joined to the Junior Red Cross as they prepared gift boxes for a boy and girl overseas. The school library gained new storybooks and a spelling contest shows both grades even. Perfect spelling papers were written by several students including Monica Ehrhardt and Kathleen Gilligan in the third grade. fourth graders listed also excelled. A speech and hearing checkup was conducted by Miss Nefsgar for the grade.

Fifth and sixth grades study Iowa unit covering crops climate soil with farm maps drawn. Sixth graders learn to add fractions with unlike denominators while fifth graders explore how simple machines ease work in science. Perfect papers in spelling credited to listed students.

Seventh grade studies subjects and direct objects while eighth grade covers parts of speech. Eighth grade explores rocks in science and both grades review how materials change when heated for a test.

Senior Vice President Interviewed in Series

The second in a four part series features Janice Marty, senior class vice president. She is 5 2 with brown hair and eyes and a welcoming smile. Her subjects include government American Literature typing and shorthand with shorthand her favorite. Janice participates in mixed chorus girls glee club band and basketball where she is a forward and one of three lettermen returning from last year. Her favorites include the song Goodnight Sweetheart actors Rock Hudson and Doris Day food chicken and reading books. She has no definite plans for after graduation.
