USDA projects a 1944 winter wheat crop of 662,275,000 bushels from 40,943,000 acres at 16.2 bushels per acre. This exceeds the 1943 harvest of 529,606,000 and the earlier 602,000,000 estimate, aided by rainfall that replenished soil moisture in much of the Great Plains. Some areas report poor germination and stand loss in the western Plains and in the Mississippi and Missouri basins due to dryness.
