The Allied expeditionary forces announce the first phase of the invasion complete. Fierce German resistance from 16 hastily massed divisions, about 150,000 men, slowed progress along a 200 mile front from the Seine Estuary near Le Havre to Cherbourg. The Mokmer field lies within about 660 miles northwest of the Philippines and within fighter range of Palau and the Coromines naval base guarding Philippine approaches. The island also hosts two other air fields sought by Sixth Army invaders as the push toward Borakae Airdrome advances.
Donald Nelson, chairman of the War Production Board, told the House postwar committee that it will not be the government's job to find work for each company after wartime orders end. He warned that postwar markets must be created by industry itself and urged firms, already productive for war, to plan private expansion with minimal government pump priming.
