Corn Outlook Warns Of Dry Spring Across Iowa
The Iowa Weather and Crop Bureau reports a severe moisture deficiency this spring with January and March setting dry records. April and May brought more rain than last year, but May 22 produced a hot southwest gale that froze exposed soil, threatening 6 to 10 percent of Iowa’s corn acreage with replanting unless further damage occurs. Last year 13 percent required replanting. Observers note good seed beds, subsoil moisture conservation, and generally strong stands in central and southern counties despite dryness.
