Electric Locomotive Demonstrates Its Strength in Test
A Baltimore and Ohio electric locomotive pulled a 26 freight car load through the Baltic tunnel with two large locomotives aiding. The test showed the electric engine could move at least 2,800,000 pounds, while five steam engines attached later joined to pull the train east. The report notes doubt about the locomotive's capability and confirms the heavy load moved through the tunnel. A separate note covers Mary Ebien Lease losing a Kansas Supreme Court appeal to be reinstated on the State Board of Charities, while prosecution of Populist board members led to their conviction on charges of gross irregularities. It also mentions a new steamship line between New Orleans and Colon, connected to San Francisco via a wholesale grocers association, pending suspension as Southern Pacific adjusts rates for shippers.
