Duane Bonwell Writes of Cruise to Hawaii
Duane Bonwell in the Navy on the U S S New York describes a cruise by the New York and two destroyers from Seattle to Hawaii and back. The voyage took eight days each way with two days in Hilo and three in Honolulu. A man fell overboard and was rescued after about thirty five minutes. Bonwell visited an active volcano near Hilo that had erupted weeks earlier. He sent a copy of The Knickerbocker ship paper with a cruise diagram and drawings of events along the 5000 mile route. The narrative mentions a whale and rough weather and ends with glimpses of dusky maidens in grass skirts.
