Republican conferees announce full agreement on tariff bill items after adjournment Saturday. A new sugar schedule was agreed upon, with expectations of passage and signing by week’s end. Senator Jones of Nevada helped secure concessions for western interests and greater beet sugar protection.
John Norman a Cleveland carpenter heard screams from the docks while crossing the central Viaduct. He leaped to the railing and dived into the river, rescuing a boy who was struggling. Both were pulled to the dock and the boy regained consciousness. Norman grew dizzy and was attended by a physician.
The Trans-Mississippi congress opened its session in Salt Lake with President Craig facing calls to resign over financial views. Report states he travels in mail coat and armor and is under protection from Secret Service units in San Francisco, Washington, and possibly New York. Safeguards are in place as assassins are believed active in San Francisco.
Gen John F Farnsworth passed away at his Washington home on Thursday after a three month illness. A naturalized American born in Eaton Canada East on March 27 1820 he served in politics Congress and the battlefield, leaving a notable public record.
Emmanuel Rich a member of a large Atlanta dry goods firm cut his throat Saturday morning and died after eluding watchers earlier. Burlingame, president of the Bank of Commerce of Springfield, Mo., convicted for taking deposits while insolvent, sentenced to three years in the state penitentiary.

Chauncey Lamb a Clinton millionaire lumberman aged likely in his forties died after two brief illnesses. His wife died months earlier. Cal E S Ormsby resigns as president of the First National Bank at Emmetsburg. E B Soper succeeds him after buying the colonel’s stock. Mr Soper and friends take control. Ormsby helped found the bank around 1870 and led it since.
A deceased woman found at Olinmaie is identified as Lieeie Ford who was drowned. The body showed decomposition and was recovered in July. Report notes clothing was present and identification completed.
Harriett Sursimers, a house servant to Rev. C. L. Smith, is arrested in LeMars on arson charges. The Morning Sioux City incident report details a church fire at Mt Hope Methodist Church south of LeMars, following a barn blaze, with Becker and James Lindsey intercepting the minister’s wife as she allegedly attempted to ignite further fuel.
Miss Lizzie Bink of Denison, who fell and broke her neck a few weeks ago, has nearly fully recovered. A lamp explosion accident caused a neck fracture near the skull base. after a month in a padded collar she regained consciousness and now has full use of her cheek and head mobility. Nervousness remains from the shock.
Director Sage of the Iowa weather service reports hog cholera deaths in all but four counties total 2 109 129. Four counties Morena Lyon Audubon Hamilton have not reported. Sage expects 2 500 000 hogs lost statewide, with feeders losing over 22 500 000 dollars in 1896. He urges quarantine and feeding hogs on grass to starve out the disease.
The annual report of Charles Robinson of Des Moines shows that the Iowa Nebraska district paid 6 324 999 in pensions during the year. Iowa residents received 4 887 230, Nebraskans 2 114 960, and others in various states the remainder. At year start 36 083 were on the roll and 53 926 received pensions that year. About 2 174 were lost from the rolls due to deaths, and with Gen George W Jones of Dubuque dying, the district’s last War of 1312 survivor drawing a pension has gone.
