Congress sets lower annual appropriations for next year

Congress will fall below 160 billion dollars in the coming fiscal year as capital outlays finish and war stocks remain large. Chairman Cannon of the House Appropriations Committee projects about 86 billion for the 12 months starting July, with roughly 54 billion for debt financing and war needs. He notes postwar appropriations have passed a high point and will trend downward despite war changes. The AAA will allocate surplus Army trucks to farmers and haulers to aid this year’s wheat harvest, but supply will be tight and distributed by need, with trucks sold to buyers at or below OPA ceilings through the treasury’s procurement office.
