Washington reports Admiral Dewey, celebrated for Manila Bay and a pivotal naval figure, died at his home at 5 58 PM after arteriosclerosis aged his death ended a 62 year career. Fire at the Canadian Car and Foundry plant near Kingsland New Jersey destroyed the factory with an estimated loss of 5.6 million dollars. The blaze forced evacuation of much of Kingsland and left about 1 000 people homeless with 17 workers reported missing. A wartime bombardment of northern New Jersey New York City Westchester and western Long Island lasted nearly five hours as shells for the Russian government were loaded but not yet fused for detonation.

Captain John Reid Willams a pioneer steamboat officer on the Mississippi River died in Warsaw at age 101. He had dealings with Chief Keokuk and Chief Black Hawk and was linked to early river trade and navigation.

Two Perish In Blast At Du Pont Plant

Four hundred thousand pounds of smokeless powder exploded at the Du Pont Powder Works in Haskell New Jersey on Friday night. The blast damaged about $1 500 000 in property and injured 22 of over 1 500 workers. The shock was felt over a 100 mile radius affecting New York New Jersey Connecticut and Massachusetts. Authorities suspect possible incendiary origin and the event comes as the second such blast in 36 hours.

Rescue of Milwaukee crewmen from Samoa beach in breeches buoy

The United States protected cruiser Milwaukee with a crew of 480 was driven ashore on a Samoa beach at dawn. All but one were saved by breeches buoy and two lifeboats through heavy surf. Thaw Tries to Die in Philadelphia Barricade

Harry Thaw, wanted in New York for kidnapping and whipping Frederick Gump Jr of Kansas City, cut his throat and wrists in West Philadelphia on Thursday. Detectives surrounded the house, Thaw asked for Dr. Blwood Kirby, was moved to St Mary’s Hospital, a bottle of poison and a razor found in his room.
