An explosion at the Rit Carmel Coal Company's mine near Chicopee Kansas at 6 44 pm Saturday evening wrecked buildings and started a fire but fans kept the blaze from spreading. Six workers are believed dead with two men escaping the shaft twenty minutes later.
Former Democratic leader Bryan headlined a Jackson Day banquet in Chicago with about five hundred guests at Tremont House. Mayor Harrison presided as toastmaster after Bryan’s reception in hotel parlors where he greeted many visitors from Iowa Indiana and Wisconsin.
A towboat named Percy Kelly leaving Pittsburgh with coal barges exploded near Glenfield on the Allegheny River. Six or eight crew died and at least four were injured. The boat was wrecked, hull sank, and upper works floated downstream with victims clinging to them. Cause of the blast unknown.
Police in Saint Louis arrested Carlos Pasquino Jose Arno Charles Cerutti and Frank Bassi in a crowded Italian quarter on swindle charges. Pasquino carried £0.00 in cash and offered no source for the money. The group is suspected of swindles in several major cities across the drip states.
A failed scheme to seize Gen Alan Sueren near Havana stirred talk as Gen Lee and King of Utah were named as unwitting participants. King sought secret passage to Gen Arangueren, but a guide warned Arangaeren as Spanish police shadowed the party. Wing learned of the failed expedition when the guide disappeared Thursday morning.
