A crowd of 106 or more gathered near Asheville North Carolina on Christmas morning when thirty pounds of powder in a cannon exploded. Dozens were injured but no fatalities reported. The blast sent a blinding smoke plume and burning debris across the scene as rescuers tended the injured.
State Department opens investigation into the murders of two American sailors attached to the U S fleet in Japan. Seaman Montrom ery of the Yorktown killed at Youkhama on September 21st, and Seaman Epps of the Olympia slain in Nagasaki while returning aboard ship. Both cases involve sober victims.
Seismic activity along Mexico’s western coast reported by the national observatory with quakes at Salva Cruz Tehuantepec Jantipes and Oaxaca City. Movements were horizontal and vertical with two years of ongoing tremors felt at sea by Oaxaca fishermen. An engineer will study the matter and report. No loss of life due to precautions by residents.

A natural gas explosion led to the temporary closure of the Chestnut Street National Bank of Philadelphia and the Chestnut Street Trust Company. Officials posted notices as crowds gathered. The bank and trust firm together held about 3 million dollars, including 1.7 million in the bank and 1.3 million in the trust company, with most deposits from local firms and city accounts.
Willa H. Kent a Brooklyn lawyer and Plymouths Church figure faces forgery charges. Mrs Mary H. Meford accuses Kent of falsely certifying a mortgage satisfaction. Assistant District Attorney Caldvidell says Kent took at least 340,000 from clients.
Gen William Booth, commander in chief of the Salvation Army, is due in New York January to assess the recent turmoil involving Ballington Booth and the army. Ballington Booth may meet his father but refuses to discuss the situation or return to the Salvation Army.
Dispatches report renewed clashes between Mussulmans and Christians in Crete with the Patterson family murdered on Culpepper Mountain. two white men Les Mills and William Hardin are jailed in Clinton Arkansas amid circumstantial evidence and fears of lynching. Reports from Spokane claim a mob hanged Chadwick Marshall and John McDonald near Colfax.
A stage carrying twenty persons was struck by a Delaware, Lackawanna and Western train at a grade crossing between Passaic and Delaware, New Jersey. Three or more feared fatally injured, others scattered. victims worked at Wethern and Aldrich mill, Delaware, two miles from Passaic. The driver saw the horses on the tracks too late and attempted to whip them forward before the gate closed. The locomotive struck the stage near the middle, hurling it ahead and breaking it apart.
Mrs. Jane Forrest of Chicago, aged, died by her own hand Wednesday, leaping from a third story window after years of nervous prostration. Relatives kept a close watch, and she imitated Miss Lena Herbert's death, crawling through a sink window to reach the stone set below, fatally injuring herself.
John Anderson was found guilty in Norfolk Virginia Friday of murdering William Wallace Saunders mate of the Schooner Olive Pecker. He faces execution on March 18 unless the Supreme Court intervenes. A defense motion for new trial was denied.
In New York on Friday a Cuban Junta official disclosed Gen Blanco sent an emmisary to join filibustering expeditions and to assassinate Gen Gomez. The Junta representative said they know the steamship and the emissary but will not join any expedition. Also reports include orders to Alaska for the Eighth Infantry and a plate glass strike in Indiana with 1600 workers. Nearby market numbers from Chicago, Detroit, To ledo, Milwaukee, Buffalo, New York, and Western regions are listed for cattle, hogs, sheep, wheat, corn, oats, rye, butter, eggs, and clover seed with various prices.
The Iowa Baptist Conference at Marshalltown settled a thirty year dispute over which college Des Moines or Felia would be recognized and supported. Des Moines College was chosen as the state college while Felia would be relegated to academy status. Final ballots listed Des Moines 3 Falls Waterloo 5 and others.
