President Wilson Hosts Princeton Class Dinner at White House

President Wilson hosted a dinner at the White House on November 30 in honor of the Princeton class of 1879 of which he was a member. The event recalled as Tommy by classmates. In Steubenville a woman's naked body wrapped in a blanket was found in a cornfield by farm hands. County authorities believe the victim was murdered. No identification has been found.

Washington December 1 Senator Kern of Indiana was re elected chairman of the senate caucus committee and floor leader by unanimous vote. Senator Pittman of Nevada was chosen secretary to succeed Senator Saulsbury. Vice chairman pro tempore and other items were postponed until Wednesday with Kern authorized to name a new steering committee of eight members.

Named to Succeed Quigley as Chicago Archbishop Mundelein

Washington reports the papal legation announced that at the next consistory Pope Pius would appoint Rt Rev George William Mundelein, bishop of Brooklyn, archbishop of Chicago, to succeed the late Archbishop Quigley. Ferdinand Brossart of Covington would be bishop of Covington and Bishop Doherty, from Jaro, Philippines, would move to Buffalo. The consistory is expected soon, likely before Christmas.

12 Perish In Cyclone At Hot Springs Health Resort

Nov 27 reports from Rock Island train passengers detail a tornado that struck Hot Springs Arkansas late Thursday. At least 12 dead with around 30 fatally injured and many more hurt as farms and outskirts suffered destruction though the city center remained largely spared. Identified dead include Mrs E B Edwards and three children, Mrs George Turner, Mrs Pam Canada and Hayden Pare with other women and children named unidentified. Paige Hill, a farm hand, is listed as missing along with other missing farm residents.

Unusual Fall of Big Horse at Mason City Bank

A 1,300 pound horse fell through a 23 inch square rear hole at the First National Bank in Mason City. The animal backed in hind feet first with no exit in the building. A wrecking crew erected timbers and used block and tackle to lift the horse out.

At a public sale auth or Hudson seed corn sold for 9.50 a sack. The corn was on the cob with scant bushel per sack. This set a new record for the year though seed corn has traded around 3 a bushel and as high as 8 in some cases. The sale marked the first time seed from a farmer brought nearly 19 a bushel.

Warned of Bank Swindles in Northern Iowa

An alleged $5,000 bank swindle reported by the state bankers association involves a man who identified as A. B. Boyd. He gained a bank cashier's confidence, secured a letter of credit after depositing checks totaling $9,900, and then cashed $3,000 in Minnesota. The deposited checks proved worthless.

Death claims George P. Groswold at age 86

George P. Groswold, once a Michigan attorney and candidate for judge of the third district, died at age 86 after years of illness. He attended the Flint G C P convention in Marshalltown and was part of the July 6, 1834 Jackson Michigan convention that helped birth the republican party. He is survived by his widow and four children.
