GOLDFIELD ITEMS From the Chronicle

Whooping cough is all the rage among the carpenter Hill young sters. Mrs. E. A. Richardson spent a few hours at home Friday. She returned to the hospital the same day. Her condition is somewhat improved. Miss Ethel Clark has resigned her position at the Variety Store and has gone to her home near Renwick. Miss Vera Keith has taken her place in the store. O. B. Keister received a message Monday conveying the sad news of the death of his son, Stuart, at Ed monds & Oak. He left Tuesday morning to attend the funeral. Monday morning a band of gypsies enjoying life in an Overland stopped in our city to ply their fortune telling art. Marshall Hinton however cut them short and showed them the quickest way out of town and they left for more favorable territory. The autos are proving a thorn for the gypsies as they look too prosperous for beggars. Supervisor Pinkham and Mayor Montgomery took a trip over the Diagonal Trail route between here and Renwick last week and raised $1200 by subscription for improvement of the above named road. When finished this will be one of the best stretches of road in northern Iowa. The farmers along the way who contributed the amount are to be complimented on their enterprise and foresight for this will mean a great year to them in the future. Word was received here this week that the marking of the trail was to begin this week at Cedar Rapids and will be carried on immediately to Spirit Lake. We may look for the trail blazers now any day.
