Amvets Auxiliary plans White Clover Day on August 11 in Renwick. Buy a White Clover and wear it to show support for disabled and hospitalized veterans as proceeds aid Amvets.
Vernon and Lake Townships residents invited to have 4 H Club members cut corn at all intersections to improve visibility. University tests indicate trimming 30 rows in each direction and pruning to the second node reduces yield by less than one bushel. Cooperation urged to enhance road safety.
The schedule lists events from August including a high school baseball game vs Goldfield at 7 45 pm on August 2, Legion meeting at 3 pm, August 3 softball games, Council meeting, August 7 moves to moments, Veterans Auxiliary and more softball games, BTW Club meeting at Mrs Bert Martin’s home, Legion Auxiliary fundraiser of 200 dollars at Legion Hall, and Royal Neighbors annual Guest Day Picnic at town park.
Maurice Nissen and Mrs William Markcie honored Mary Ellen Kleen at a pre-nuptial shower Thursday evening July 26 at the Maurice Nissen home. Guests were Miss Kleen's young friends. The evening included games and a buffet lunch.
Installation services Sunday August 5 at 10:00 a.m. at Lake Evangelical Lutheran Church. Rev Orville L Olson will replace Pastor T J Severtson who retires after 39 years at Lake Church and 44 years in ministry. Olson a Luther Seminary graduate from St Paul was ordained May 20 this year. He is a Glover North Dakota native, married with a daughter.
Mr and Mrs Curtis Nelson welcomed a son, Rodger Carsten. Airman First Class and Mrs Newell Roseberry of Calumet Michigan are parents of a son born Sunday July 29, weighing six pounds eleven ounces. Mr and Mrs Bob Hoffman of Eagle Grove welcomed a daughter Laur ie Anne born July 22 at Webster City hospital, weighing eight pounds six ounces. Mrs Hoffman returned home last week. her mother Mrs Juan of Jewell is visiting. Mr and Mrs Walt Hoffman are grandparents and have visited the Huffman home in Eagle Grove.
Mrs Wilbur Phipps entered Luth eran Hospital in Fort Dodge for observation. Lynn Darland left for several days at Lake Okoboji with the Fort Dodge Messenger carriers as a reward for carrier route increases.
The Renwick Fortnightly Club will host its 22nd annual Flower Show on Wednesday August 15 at Masonic Hall Renwick. Entries accepted 9:00 pm to 1:00 pm on show day with judging starting at 12:30 pm. Prizes awarded for top exhibitor ribbons in multiple sections including gazania and artistic arrangements.
Donald Palmer and Selmer Nerem of Palmer Nerem Chevrolet in Renwick announce a two-school system starting September 4. They also describe a new Mobilgas Tank Wagon offering Mobil gas Mobiloil Mobil Diesel Fuel and Mobil Lubricants with a Print-Q-Matic meter printing delivery tickets.
Nancy Latch writes from aboard the Queen Mary about four hours from New York, noting a non seasick, light headed mood. She describes deck scenes, hotel like accommodations, meals, a cinema, a full moon and rainbow as the Atlantic reveals many blues. She mentions tea, crumpets, and a British party, with plans to write again after landing.
Fifty four contestants enter the regional Queen of the Furrow contest at North Iowa Fair Mason City on August 8 with Sandra Helmick Renwick and Arlene Larson Bede chosen to advance from the local area. Regional winners advance to the national finals in Newton September 15. The queen earns a 21 jewel wrist watch and a Dream Week End in Chicago for herself and parents.
BTW Club enjoyed a breakfast on Thursday July 26 at Mrs Raymond Paine home. Mrs Frank Engstrom assisted as hostess. Demonstrations on washing windows and repairing furniture were given by Roxie White Betty Ennstrout and Dawn Clowes. Singers Sharon Hoffman Joanne Aspe Linda Huntley performed Dreaming with Judy Henriksen at the piano.
The Boone Valley Board set September 4 as school opening to avoid the Iowa State Fair and amid delays from Vernon Consolidated asset division. An Arbitration Committee failed to reach a unanimous decision, so plans proceed to operate in Renwick and Hardy buildings with new desks and a 54 passenger bus. Bus drivers named include Adah Erwin, Eugene Ellinger, Duane McCurry, Stanley McCurry, Ray Ellsworth, Asa Brayton, Bob Fisher, and Harold Green. Kindergarten routes will be driven by Lois Fisher and Ray Ellsworth at noon. Student registration is scheduled for August 2 and 8 with details to come.
Oakdale Chapter of the Izaak Walton League announces a dance on Saturday August 11 at the new Farmers Co-op grain storage bin venue starting 9:00 p.m. Marek Brothers Accordion Band will perform old time modern and western tunes. Proceeds fund playground equipment for the League grounds. Tickets available through members. Carroll Potter visited the Dooley home for Sunday dinner.
The fifteenth biennial French family reunion was held Sunday July 29 at Renwick School. A picture program led by Walter Martin preceded a noon pot luck dinner. Frank French presided over a short afternoon business session and officers were named for the next term. About 85 members and visitors attended from Des Moines Humboldt Waterloo Corwith Nevada Ackley Madison Wis Winona Minn Clarion Northwood Livermore and other communities.
