Most Expensive Veto In History of the State

Senator A J Shaw denounces the veto of the Homestead Tax Exemption Act as the costliest decision in state history. The governor argues Iowa must continue to fund railroads utilities and non resident owners, while Shaw asserts the veto shifts millions annually away from relief and pensions and onto everyday shoppers. The act would have redirected funds via a millage levy replacing it with sales tax credits, a move Shaw says would have reduced municipal tax delinquencies and preserved funding for schools and communities. The veto, supported by a large majority in the legislature, faces possible override but carries an immediate toll on residents and counties alike.
