President Roosevelt issued an inflation containment order prohibiting wage increases beyond the Little Steel formula, freezing wages, expanding price controls, and banning new hires except under War Manpower rules. The move aimed to curb price pressures as draft classifications shifted workers into new categories and wartime mobilization surged with large naval and air force funding requests.
US reports said Germans sent fresh divisions to the Russian front while Red forces widened a bridgehead south of Izyum on the Donets. In Kharkov area Soviet gains followed Izyum setback as Germans mass in Balakleya. Smolensk front quiet after a brief Russian thrust northeast of the stronghold, with both sides preparing for spring offensives.
Allied armies close in on Rommel as Montgomery and Patton converge from south and east while Anderson’s First Army blocks in the north. Axis gains collapse after El Akarit breakthrough with heavy Allied air and artillery support.
British reconnaissance photos confirm RAF bomber crews struck Berlin industrial zones. Thirty key war factories were destroyed or damaged in a raid, with vast devastation south and southwest of central Berlin. Railway repair shops freight yards and Templehof airfield were listed as damaged.
Secretary Knox said salvage of the 83,000 ton former French liner Normandie, now La Fayette, burning and capsized at the pier on February 5 1932, is advancing rapidly and should be righted by midsummer. The ship is being refitted for naval service.
In a Commons statement Hugh Dalton, president of the Board of Trade, announced Britain will receive 410,000 American alarm clocks to replace worn out clocks in postwar coal mines and for night shifts. The issue arose after a member complained miners were waking late for 2 2 a.m. shifts.
