Death near Verdi as train stops automobile on tracks

Moran and Judge Dodge narrowly escaped death when their automobile stalled on the Southern Pacific tracks between Verdi and Laughton Springs. The Overland Limited, approaching at speed, halted just yards away after Moran alerted Dodge and both men sprang clear. A bystander helped stop the train and Dodge recounted the incident with relief, praising railroad timing and courage.

Wife leaves one dollar to be paid in four installments

In Chicago district court a Portland, Oregon widow named Catharine EB Heckler wills a token estate with one dollar payable in four monthly installments of 35 cents each. The will, filed by attorney B S Hague of Portland, describes a code husband who allegedly deserted after a 1895 San Diego marriage. The estate is primarily personal property.
