Rockefeller Says He Did Not Plan Original Standard Oil Trust

New York November 23 John D Rockefeller testified in the government suit to dissolve Standard Oil. He disputed plans to have him recount only yearly figures and noted his direct exam covered only up to 1683. Kellogg pressed for broader cross examination revealing hazardous nature of oil refining and Rockefeller walked two miles to his church after resting at Pocantico Hills. The hearing resumed with Skel logg cross examining and discussion of stockholders of South Improvement Company and Standard Oil affiliates.

Ruef Chaffeur Testifies in Bribery Trial Stand

In San Francisco November 23 the bribery trial of Abraham Ruef resumed with former Supervisor James Gallagher withdrawn as no longer a witness. Alexander Latham, brought back on extradition papers, testified he saw Ruef obtain a shirt box first at the United Railroads office and later at the Western National Bank. Latham admitted previously swearing to the statements during his examination grand jury and that those statements, wholly or partly, were untrue. He maintained he did not swear to the affidavit later, saying it was dictated by Wing Burns despite objections from the defense.
