Union Pacific machinists strike across system

Union Pacific machinists walked out today across large and small shops after a union decision last Sunday. About 1700 workers affected. local shops closed. officials anticipated a quick return to work and a prompt settlement. Some shops and outlying locations reported partial participation and mixed responses from local unions.

House Adopts Deficiency Bill Amid Conference Lines

Washington June 30. House conferees adopted the general deficiency appropriation bill report leaving dispute items totaling 1 996 000 including Buffalo and Charleston expositions and Hawaiian claims. Members urged separate votes on Buffalo and Charleston allocations, Ohio river improvement, and Hawaiian payments. Senate pace for Philippine Civil Government talks points to adjournment plans for 3 pm tomorrow with work and naval bills pending.

Copies of a notice distributed among Barwood colliery strikers invite workers to resume at Harwood colliery when a majority inside and outside workmen wish to begin. Foremen will not reveal applicants. Pardee & Co signed the notice. Guards and Cox deputies clashed with strikers as Sheriff Jacobs arrived, dispersing the crowd.

Striking engineers and pump men in city return to work

About thirty five striking engineers and pump men reported for duty today with most employed. Firemen refused to join the movement while in the district roughly forty engineers and pump runners remain out though expected to resume by week’s end. The John Bruner Furniture Company plans a large new branch here as Ryland building is completed. Weather forecast: pair tonight cloudy, cooler Tuesday, especially in the west.

Ice Pack Report Clears Jeanie and Portland Rescue Hopes

The Centennial arrived at Port Townsend nine and a half days from Cape Nome with news that the Jeanie and Portland are sighted in the ice pack on June 17 eighty miles north of Cape Prince of Wales. The Thetis loss story is false. Thetis stands by the imprisoned vessels and Belvedere confirms Jeanie and Portland are unharmed with good chances of escape.

Wind Storm Wreaks Havoc Near Alton NJ

Destructive wind and rain storm caused $1,060,000 in damage within 150 miles of Alton. Wood River overflowed flooding farms forcing residents to retreat to upper stories. Reuter farm and surrounding lands were washed out, wrecking crops and isolating land as waters subsided.

Weather and flood ruin crops and livestock losses

A heavy wind and rain at Danville on Saturday damaged the oat crop and harmed wheat and corn. Vermilion River overflowed beyond thirty year levels, topsoil crops on bottom lands were ruined, fences and buildings damaged, and some livestock carried away. In East Alton the Western Car tridge Company suffered losses above five thousand dollars, while Piasa Creek district reports show farmers rushing stock out of the valley and losing shocked wheat and all crops there.
