President Wilson engages Senate leaders in the food bill dispute aiming to end manufacturing of foodstuffs into alcohol. He seeks authority to permit use of foodstuffs for beer and light wines, hoping to secure swift passage as conferences continue.
Mexico City June 29 report says land and sea forces pursue the pirate schooner Mariscal, owned by Compania Explotadora de Dorantes in Tabasco, accused of preying on Vera Cruz and Tabasco fishing fleets and coastal towns. Rebels reportedly seized the vessel earlier and its crew operates near Tonala bar, raiding weaker towns along the gulf rivers.
Cananea Consolidated Copper Company stores in Cananea Mexico were confiscated by Mexican officials after the mine, mill and smelter shutdown on June 21. Authorities cited inability to run the mines due to a depleted explosives supply. In Washington, Constantine J. Smyth was nominated by President Wilson to be chief justice of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, succeeding Chief Justice Sheppard.
Special dispatches from Athens say Prince Christopher, brother of former King Constantine of Greece, is coming to London to marry a rich American woman. The Chronicle gives the name "Mi Tats" with few details on her identity. The prince, twenty nine, is a former sub lieutenant in the Grecian infantry and has twice been reported engaged to wealthy American women.

Premier Lloyd George warned Glasgow that the war would end only after Entente armies achieve their declared aims and guarantee them. He cautioned that ending earlier would be the greatest disaster in mankind, while noting Germany also desires peace for a price and urges indemnity and concessions before retreat.
Livingston Mont June 2 An increase of five cents per hour in the wages of all carmen employed in the Northern Pacific shops in this city Butte Laurel and Billings is announced effective July 1. Four hundred shopmen are affected in this city.
British forces report a successful offensive on a 2000 yard front south and west of Oppy in the Arras area. They say prisoners and machine guns were taken and that ground was gained south of the Souchez river. Avion, about two miles south of Lons, was entered as part of the advance.
May end questions today as a Montana Power Company grievance committee meets with electricians officials in Butte. Machinists also join in, signaling broader union sympathy. The electricians seek higher wages while the machinists advise negotiating to resolve the dispute.
Reports state Allied forces continue to advance on a broad front south of the Souches river and have entered Avion. Prisoners and six machine guns captured. A raiding party north of Cherissy was repulsed. Trenches southeast of Loos were raised. German efforts on Verdun front near Halles and Avecourt met heavy shelling.
Paris June 29 Maj Gen Pershing yesterday received a delegation from the Alsace Lorraine republican committee. Stahling praised his Alsatian ancestry and declared pride in a descendant of their country fighting for their inalienable rights and the restoration of the lost provinces to France. Pershing was moved and expressed happiness to greet representatives of a people who suffered fidelity to their country.
At a lakeside cottage Morris P Bradford killed Miss Alice Black Richards head teacher at the state school for the feeble minded while three guests Miss Elizabeth Suess and Miss Dorothy Davis were wounded and bound. Bradford surrendered to police and faces a hearing.
The Mine Work Union, after a threatened strike for higher wages and better conditions, gains recognition and support. J. A. Taylor, international machinists organizer, helped press electricians to negotiate. Federal mediator W. Hodgers continued probing the local union situation.
Brookline Massachusetts June 29 an inquest was held into the death of Mrs Pauline Keyes wife of George H Keyes a real estate operator found with bullet wounds in her head and hand in her home on June 19 Miss Harriet A Varney arrested at Upton on June 26 pleaded not guilty to murdering Mrs Keyes and is held in Dedham county jail awaiting a July 6 hearing Relatives say she was believed by them to be Mrs Keyes wife
Washington June 23. A two day convention of the United States boys working reserve opened in Council of National Defense offices. The aim is to mobilize boy labor to offset wartime shortages when conscription starts. William E. Hall, national director, said boys aged sixteen to twenty one are already employed on thousands of farms and prove satisfactory laborers.
Special to the Gazette reports scores of Hawaiian women and children attempted to throw themselves into molten lava at Mt Kilavea as a supposed sacrifice to Pele. The movement, led by Maneau a fourteen year old girl, prompted authorities to intervene and halt the frenzy sweeping Hookena village and surrounding areas.
Athens reports Greece has broken diplomatic relations with Germany Austria Hungary Bulgaria and Turkey. War is not formally declared, but the government contends a state of war exists since its new administration took power yesterday.
Washington June 29 progress is being made in the construction of hundreds of submarine chasers ordered by the navy department. At New York navy yards a dozen 110 foot wooden hulls are completed with more hulls to roll out as August nears with deliveries planned at three per day. Engine production lags but is expected to catch up before August 1. No decision yet on adding boats beyond the current order.
Rotterdam dispatches report Frankfurt Zeitung presses censored with no independent opinion allowed. Dutch sources say government muzzles press to print bare news, excluding commentary, amid anticipation of dramatic Reichstag developments next week.
Chaumiain J. P Abel of the board announced seven men are under consideration for U of W president and will be presented to the board of regents. Abel, just back from the East and Middle West, declined to name the candidates and warned against public disclosure. The pool includes experienced educators from major universities such as Chicago Washington Penn Columba Yale Cornell Micha Illinois Wisconsin Kansas Nebraska and other institutions.
June 29 report from Copenhagen quotes M Hun Ihlen criticizing a German plot to blow up Norwegian steamships. Bombs were said to have been sent to Norway via a messenger to the German legation in Christiania. The Norwegian legation in Berlin was ordered to protest and await Germany's reply. The messenger was to be handed to Germany after questioning with assurances he would not be used again.
